Fireteam Ashen(10): The Next Step
Looking for a different chapter? Here's the Master Post.
"Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I'll be sure to send a Titan down to look into that temple you mentioned." Zavala said. The team turned and began to exit the room. "Oh, one last thing." Zavala added, "The Speaker requested to see Cosmo and Validus. He didn't tell me why, but you are to report to him ASAP." "What about me?" Avesk asked. "You're free to do whatever you want, as long as it abides by the Tower rules." Zavala replied. "Sweet. I'll be down in the bar if anyone needs me. Have a nice life, see ya." Avesk said as he wandered out of the room. Validus looked at Cosmo. "Well, I guess we shouldn't keep the Speaker waiting." They walked over to Tower North and entered the Speaker's chambers. "Greetings, little Lights." The Speaker called down from his study. "Why did you call us here?" Cosmo asked. The Speaker descended the stairs. "Let me ask you a question first: What does it mean to be a Guardian?" Validus and Cosmo pondered the question for a moment before answering. "Taking back our worlds and fighting our enemies." "Defending the City and the Traveler." The Speaker nodded. "Both of those are true. But it is more than just that. Guardians are a beacon of hope. In some ways, they are Children of the Traveler itself. They are able to wield the Light, much like how the Traveler was able to do so long ago. It is time you took the next step in becoming a Guardian. It is time you learned to touch the Light. Come. It is time to meet your instructors." The Speaker led the two to a secluded area, a walkway above the courtyard that was seldom visited. Two Guardians stood, a Hunter and a Titan, silent waiting. The Hunter was juggling some knives, while the Titan only stood silently with his arms crossed. The Speaker gestured to the the two Guardians before leaving Cosmo and Validus alone with them. The Titan leaned against a large tree, waiting patiently as Validus cautiously approached him. "So you're Validus then?" The Titan asked, "I'm Patriot-121. I'm supposed to teach you to wield the Light. What do you know about the Light?" Validus frowned. "I just know it's something the Traveler had and that Guardians somehow can use it to battle their foes." Patriot harrumphed. "So you don't know much, do you? Come on, I'm going to give you a good lesson on how the Light works." He led Validus away to another part of the tower. "Well, now that those two are out of the way, I can finally teach you about the exquisiteness of the Hunter." Cosmo's mentor said. "Think fast!" He shouted, and then a knife directly at Cosmo's face. "Ahh!" He screamed and fell to the ground. His Ghost resurrected him a moment later. "What the heck was that for!?" Cosmo yelled. "I'm testing your reflexes and skills." The veteran Hunter replied, "So far, you're doing phenomenally bad. A Hunter needs to always be quick on the draw, ready to respond to immediate danger. The name's Joden. Remember it, because it will be on the test." "Um, test?" Cosmo wondered aloud. "No questions!" Joden shouted, "How much experience do you have in the field?" "Um, I've been on a few missions." Cosmo answered. "Huh. Well, I'm taking you on another one. Get your gear and meet me in the hangar in fifteen minutes." "But-" "Go!" Without a third prompt, Cosmo jogged to the Guardian Vaults to retrieve his equipment. The veteran shook his head slowly. "This is going to take a lot of work to get this one into shape." He sighed to himself.
Click here for the next chapter
