Think about this:
D2 will require some method for a new player to be able to purchase the game and create a character and play through the game without having to own D1.
Players who want a new experience can use this route to start fresh.
I expect that what will happen will be a new Tower opening up. That we will arrive at the new Tower either as new Guardians or as our current Guardians, stripped of inventory... Some introductory event will render us newbs.
Veteran guardians might have a side quest that allows them to investigate the first spawn location - which will allow them to regain their old inventory and open up access back to the original tower and their old vaults...
What I'm saying is that it doesn't have to be black and white. There are ways that they could preserve our inventory whilst at least temporarily separating us from it - or even allowing players to make a clean break.
I personally think that it would be interesting to land on another tower and discover that the one we are familiar with only covers one section of the wall. That The Speaker isn't actually the leader of the entire city but that there are other groups and hierarchies out there who have their own versions of history.
Maybe with leaders who could and do tell us stories.

If they strip my guardian of all the gear I have spent so much time enjoying, they might as well finish the job and just delete my guardian straight up. I won't spend another dime on this game. I hope they do what they have done in the past for new players and offer a Light kit and lvl kit.

Many MMOS have a either 1. A hybrid system where new players start at level 1 with no gear and veteran players start at their previous level. The game would detect their level and only allow them to play at the appropriate level until they've completed the mission, thus unlocking difficulty tiers. 2. A booster for new players to grant them min level requirement and one set of gear to play the content at veteran levels. TTK offered this option via Spark of Light which boosted players to level 25 and fully leveled one subclass.

The more I think about it, the more that the option to allow players to choose to fresh start or not becomes the route that seems obvious. I nearly started a fresh character in TTK. In a new game I would be even more tempted to experience the new player path at least once.

Destiny 2 will have new locations, you wont see any locations from this current game, in fact don't even expect to see anyone other than the Speaker.

I can't imagine that we would lose the Tower and it's population. It being there is such a central part of the overarching story and there are still very many loose plot ends hanging around in that place. As long as guardians are still defending the Last City I think that it will be our central hub. Why would the factions and staff of the place would suddenly change when they have had all this character development? It's like you want a new game in a new universe. Like screw it lets just rewrite the whole plot and start again...

Sensible and true. Some people want to remodel, join new players. To those who played more conservative on the facial paint and mohawks, keep current guardians but placed on same level for a while, maybe getting all you gear at level 40 equivalent...
