Great info man, but it really won't help too many players who rented their router from their ISP. (eg. Comcast) It's locked down a lot and some QoS options are not their. ~TheGreatNike

  • Its not a single size solution. I realise that. As long as most guardians out there stop using WiFi, use a fixed IP on the console and either use uPnP or port forwarding, I think that will improve the experience for everyone.

  • You have to also remember, there is hardware degradation. Having old routers showing bad signs are not good. Also, Wi-Fi AC is nearly comparable with Ethernet while on short range, which the One I think supports? ~TheGreatNike

  • I'd take copper over WiFi for gaming any day of the current Epoch ¯\_(シ)_/¯ Wifi has its place, don't get me wrong, but when you know as much as me about wifi signals, its copper all the way for me :)

With WiFi, you don't need to worry about Ethernet cables getting worse. Or tangled. I love me some Cat 5e cables, they're really really good. I run Ethernet while gaming because it's currently the best options, but I've used WiFi with 5 GHz, there is difference between 2.4 GHz, but you have to admit, a lot of wireless improvements are being made, while Ethernet is sort of remaining stagnant. ~TheGreatNike

  • Hmmm. I prefer Cat6 or 7. Personally I run my home network with cat 7 and IP v6. i get a boost of 1.5 Gbps on my lan over cat 5 with IP v4. Recent developments in ethernet technology make it possible to get a 10Gb network across copper. I got a 10G lan at work. People really don't need anything above 1gb ethernet at home at the moment due to the connection to ISP is much slower. If home broadband goes to 5GB then I'm raiding my lab at work and stealing a Cisco switch :p

I an responsible for kit in 5 data centres around Scotland :) Cables don't get tangled unless you are moving things about and generally fudging with stuff that doesn't need to be fudged with.

  • Tangles?! Thats everything BUT my ethernet, which I carefully and discreetly ran along my walls to the other side of the room, whilst having a nice cup of tea. My power cable and whatnot... yeah... 😖
