I feel nothing but pity (edit: ok pity may have been too strong of a word but I am not changing it) when someones best game experience is destiny. There are just so many games out there with just so much more to them. "Real" characters with emotional depth and complexity. Worlds crafted with the utmost care and attention to detail. Actual story that can bring a sense of accomplishment for how you affected the in game world and in some cases bring you to tears at the events that occur within them. Then you have destiny. An above average shooter with replayability, interesting ideas that arnt fully fleshed out, and a decent social atmosphere. Destiny is fun, yes, but it just lacks so much. Fun alone is not enough.

  • I feel something akin to pity for someone who gets anything "meaningful" from video games in terms of characterization or plot development. For me, games are either fun to play or not. As an art form they are pretty lame in terms of providing any depth or pathos. Sure, the Last of Us had an emotional ending, but to my mind it wasn't that great. If I want intellectual stimulation and emotional involvement, I'll read a fvckin book. Maybe watch a movie . But play some dopey RPG or a game with uncanny valley characters faggin up cutscenes? Far down the list. Even the best among them a la Bioshock isn't that special compared to the worst Jack Ketchum novel. My .02

  • I believe games to have more of a potential as art than movies or books because of the interactivity.

  • The potential is there...as yet untapped

  • Look up "brothers a tale of two sons" That game is damn close. I believe totalbiscuit has a review or a discussion about it on youtube if you want to know more in detail.

  • Dude I played that game. I respect your point about the potential of a game to offer deep characterization...but compared to any book, a game where each thumb stick operates a different character is weak in comparison. Read East of Eden. Now there's a story about brotherhood that's worth a hot fart.

  • You can't be comparing books to games. A book is one person who has no limit to express their imagination and flesh out their world through limitless amount of words. Games have a budget, 100's of people working on them, constraints, and multiple skills and professions coming together just to make it work. It's only been like, what, 30 years or something since 8 bit? We've come a long way, fast, and we are not stopping. The Last of Us is a great example for character driven story, Souls games are great for environmental story, god of War is great just for a rage story. It's getting there.

  • Taste is taste. Remember this is a game, the enjoyment of which is not subject to an objective scale of 'good and bad'. If I think pickles are the best and you think pizza is the best, are you more right than me because you've eaten more things?? Or do we both just love what we love?? Can't people just love what they love?

  • You can definitely enjoy something more than something else thats for sure. You can have more fun with destiny than games most would consider "better". But there is more to an experience than just enjoyment. Do you enjoy when certain characters in a movie book or game die? No but it enhances the "experience" and makes you think about it more.

  • Exactly. And everyone defines that level of enjoyment THEMSELVES. It's no one's right to shed pity on someone because of what they enjoy. In fact, it is a poor show of the understanding of taste and what it means to like something. Please, take your pity elsewhere, and let these people enjoy their game without your unjustified judgement.

  • Judgement? I will admit pity was too strong of a word but I am not judging anyone here. I just think they can find an even better experience than they have already found in destiny elsewhere.

  •
Judgement? I will admit pity was too strong of a word but I am not judging anyone here. I just think they can find an even better experience than they have already found in destiny elsewhere.
I am very pleased to present The Annual Contradictory Paragraphs Award to you Guardian! So you're saying that (to your tastes and in your opinion) you've experienced better games than Destiny, and you feel that (in your tastes and in your opinion) the people playing Destiny can find a similar 'better experience' elsewhere. While this may be true, and you are entitled to your opinion, you cannot escape that being labeled as judgement. You are using your own experiences to dictate what others should experience based on what you assume they have and have not. That's pretty much textbook judgement cast. Think what you will, just don't tell me it's better than what others think.

  • While what you are saying sounds good I would still argue that destiny does nothing to deserve that kind of attachment. I would need some example of something that makes destiny special and not just a case of "it was my first game". To agree with you completely. My point of emphasis on this issue is more on the game than the person.

I'm sorry but you don't seem to understand. Some people play Candy Crush and Flappy Bird for 8 hours everyday. Does it mean that they are better games than Destiny? No.. But to them? YES. Some people enjoy Destiny for 8 hours a day. Does it mean that it is better than Flappy Bird? No.. But to them? YES. My favorite game isn't Destiny but I play Destiny the most. Does it mean Destiny is better?? NO. There are WAY too many factors involved in what makes a game better or worse than the next. These factors can range from being objective like frame rate or lag, and subjective like level design and story elements. If you're going to make the JUDGEMENT CALL on what makes a game better than the next I'd say you're delusional. You cant make that decision for everyone. You just can't People will love this game no matter how much you think others are better. You better get used to that, and you better respect it, because you'll get nothing but disrespect for criticising something that was built for enjoyment. A video game doesn't have a quantifiable "enjoyment factor" that you can statistically track and compare. Sure, the Penguins were better than the Sharks this year. The Cavaliers were better than the Warriors. But the concept of having a quantifiable rating of Destiny as being better or worse than some other game is simply too subjective to debate. You can like it, you can dislike it. But you can't tell others you're more right than they are.
It's like saying Michael Jackson is better than Michael Bublé. While I would have to agree, I'm not about to make that statement as a FACT and claim that I have the perfect compass of musical enjoyment.
•
I love this game, it is my second favorite game of all time, first is Tales of Symphonia as seen in the picture.
I guess you didn't read my whole thread... Guess I have to explain it again so you can read it... Many games I play its about the memories, its the people I play with the experience I have with them. Some people might not like Tales of Symphonia's story, I do. What made it even better was the people I played with also the gameplay was so on point. Some people might not like the story and lore behind Destiny, I do. Read all the Grimoire cards and my favorite youtube channels are the people who talk about the lore. Not only do I love the lore and gameplay but I also loved the people I played with.

  • Why? Because I know there are objectively better games out there than destiny, ones that can leave you with a better feeling in an hour than destiny can in thousands? Pity may have been too strong of a word. But destiny is nothing special it does nothing different besides being highly replayable.

Other games that have those stories feel to linear for my taste. It's only one good playthrough, no replay-ability and the atmosphere doesn't feel as free.
