Mudvayne, while being NüMetal and wearing silly makeup both of which I'm not a huge fan of, still manages to create a distinct sound that stands out in it's cookie-cutter genre. The crazy bass lines as well ass the singer's Maynard-esque voice and the slightly off kilter song composition keeps it interesting, unlike Disturbed which sounds exactly the same as every other NüMetal band out there. Green Day, while eventually becoming the definition of selling out a scene, was a legitimately great punk band before they took the money and signed on the dotted line. They used to play with Operation Ivy back in the day and members of Green Day were known to fill in for sick band members from time to time. 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours and Kerplunk were (are) classic pop punk albums at it's best with Dookie being one of the best pop punk albums of all time. They did sell out on that album for two reasons: Lookout records couldn't handle the demand for Green Day and they managed to rip Green Day off in the ballpark of a couple million dollars. I'd be a little disenchanted with small record labels at that point too. Beyond that they managed to put out some good singles but admittedly haven't recreated the magic they had on earlier albums.
