Wombo combo requires a grenade (usually vortex, maybe voidwall) AND a melee charge. The melee charge has to be set to envenom, AND you have to pick a perk to extend the duration instead of giving orbs to allies. Almost the entirety of the subclass gets geared around it just for a few kills per match. Meanwhile, other subclasses can just run fusion grenades and get a similar amount of kills without having to center their subclass around it.
The grenades for nightstalker are extremely lackluster by themselves, smoke bomb simply compliments them and helps you secure kills. It's incredibly balanced if you ask me.
