My 2 biggest issues with Destiny

I like Destiny. It’s a solid game with a lot of replay value that, despite all its flaws, has remained consistently addictive for me. However, the flaws that are present in the game are some of the most obnoxious I’ve seen in a game. These flaws mainly come in once you reach the endgame and when you play in the Crucible, so I’ll be tackling those 2 areas. Also, I should probably point out that this is going to be very subjective and mostly based off my thoughts and opinions, so if people disagreeing with and/or challenging your opinions triggers you, please stop reading now. Part One: The Crucible Might as well start right off with what may just be the most controversial aspect of Destiny; The Crucible. From the beginning, I’ve always hated Destiny’s PvP. It felt unbalanced, poorly designed, and the reasoning for it to exist according to the in-game lore has always felt flimsy at best. There’s also the issue of Bungie hearing complaints about a certain aspect of the PvP and deciding that instead of balancing it they’d rather just nerf it into the ground. These drastic weapon and ability changes really irk me because more often than not, they affect both the PvP and the PvE, meaning that whenever the PvP meta gets a drastic change, the PvE meta is changed as a result. You’ve also got the issue of how the consistent strategy in the Crucible is to spam whatever’s the most powerful at the moment. Because Bungie prefers to make weapons and perks completely useless instead of spending the time to fine-tune and balance them (Besides 2.0, that update admittedly fixed a lot of issues and got the game into a decently balanced state), the game eventually ends up with one weapon that is incredibly powerful as a result. Any veteran player could name some of them off; weapons like the Suros Regime, the Thorn, and most recently, weapons like the MIDA Multi-Tool and sniper rifles in general, namely the 1000-Yard Stare. Because these weapons are vastly superior to most others, you’ll begin to see players use them to gain an edge, before suddenly everybody’s using them so that they aren’t completely crushed in the Crucible. Remember when Mayhem launched and was a great time to just spam everything because everything was equally viable due to how OP everything was? Now it’s just people running with shotguns and sniper rifles because special ammo drops more often than in regular modes, as well as Hunters spamming Tripmine Grenades and Titans spamming the Fist of Havoc (Panic). What was once a fun mode has now become filled with-you guessed it-everybody using the same OP strategies. And do I even have to mention the Trials of Osiris mode? I’ve only played it once, and frankly I have no desire to ever go back. It was just the Crucible, but harder as well as containing an increase in basically everything bad about it, and judging by what I’ve heard, that hasn’t changed in the slightest. So yeah, The Crucible kinda sucks, which is a shame considering that I’ve gotten a much more consistent amount of high-quality rewards from playing in comparison to PvE. Part Two: The Raids Now don’t get me wrong, I love the raids, or at least the first 2, but more on that later. In fact, I’ve found them to be some of the most intelligent and entertaining content I’ve ever played in a shooter. They are, with no doubt in my mind, the pinnacle of the entire game. The problem arises when you remember that they are very heavily based on cooperation. Let’s face it, the Destiny community isn’t exactly the friendliest out there, and the Raids suffer because of it. You’ve got more than your fair share of elitist scumbags (If you don’t have *Insert incredibly specific item/weapon here*, you can’t play with us because we don’t like these to be difficult!), your obnoxious squeakers (MOTHER ****, I ****ED UR MOM LAST NIGHT, KYS), your clueless idiots (What’s a relic? Who’s Golgoroth? Wait, why are we firing rockets at the green guy at certain times?), etc. As somebody who didn’t participate in the King’s Fall raid back when it first appeared, I now have serious issues finding anybody to raid with. It doesn’t help that I have no mic, but when a majority of KF normal requests that I find are for people 305+, things get a bit ridiculous. I understand that there are people out there that are more than happy to help less experienced players, but they seem to be a bit of a dying breed. “But why is that such an issue?” You might be asking. “Why don’t you just not raid?” Well, I do kinda want to get to a higher level. I’ve still got 32 light levels to go until I hit the cap, and it’s basically impossible unless you either play the KF raid or you’re really good at Trials. I hate how the raid, which is extremely heavily based on teamwork, is essentially the only way to obtain max light in PvE. What if I just prefer to play more casually, or am a more solo player? Why is there not just some super difficult solo endgame content? I find it ridiculous that solo players are punished in a game that, besides the raids, barely even focuses on cooperation. I know that the strikes are a core part of the game, but those are basically just regular missions that require 2 other people, and you can’t seriously tell me that you’ve needed to have constant communication with your team during a strike. Again, I’m not complaining about the raids themselves; I love the raids. I just think that a mode that requires constant communication in order to succeed shouldn’t be the only practical way to achieve max light level. And if that never changes, the Bungie should at least implement some changes that makes being a Sherpa a more enticing experience, like a higher quality/amount of rewards for a team with somebody who has never completed the raid you’re running. In Conclusion So yeah, I have some pretty big issues with the endgame that I very much hope Bungie is looking at right now. Please let me know what you think (civilly) in the comments.

  • You should be happy about the april update. Poe 41 has matchmaking, can drop 320, and has no weekly reward limit. Endgame pve will always require teamwork. Don't expect to be able to get to the highest endgame levels without a mic and without playing with anyone else.

    • Let me ask this: If you have no real desire to play endgame activities why then is it important for you to reach max light lvl?

      • Destiny is not like all the other games people compare it to. It has its own uniqueness. If you want steady pvp play cod. If you want great pve experiences go play Diablo 3 and such. You can't blame bungie for making a game for fun and people taking it seriously. No game studio has people/time to play test and evaluate the game. They get more feedback in 1 hour of everyone playing the game after release than they do beforehand.

        • I really disagree with what you've said. In response to your crucible part: The damned crucible is broken because of SBMM. That's it. Long and short. High and low. Thin and fat. Haha. Seriously. It is a mess. There is absolutely nothing else wrong with it other than Stormcallers being able to get you around a 90 degree corner. Take blink shotgun for example. It was nerfed, but is still highly effective. Especially with this new sniper craze. If you're any good at destiny pvp you know that it's all about the radar. I hardly ever even look at the screen other than the radar.. Based on the radar you know exactly where everyone is. So if you get flanked by a blink shotgunner, you should see them approaching, jump, throw a nade and get ready to melee to counter. Or slide under them. There are so many options. Look if you got killed....you got killed. That's it. Sure it's annoying. But that should spark something in your brain to say 'hmm maybe I need to switch my subclass and Loadout to counter this jackass with his blinky blink!' But the lag is real. So that sucks. The raid: The only thing that's wrong with the raid is the time gated challenge mode, and the awful drops otherwise. That's it. If you like raiding...join a clan. Make some friends. That has been the point of Destiny since launch. However so many people want to play this game without friends. I just don't get it. It's a social game that's similar to a space shooting fashion show and so many people play solo and use lfg to find others to do stuff and things with. Don't you speak to them in chat? Haven't you met at least 5 others whom you thought were fun to be in chat with? Come on man. What seems to be the issue?

I think the problems you face with destiny can be solved quite easily. Step one get a damn mic, not that expensive for a basic one. Step two find some regular ppl to play with, plenty of clans out there. If you play with ppl regularly enough you don't even need to worry about communication in the raids that much. When I played with my clan honestly we talked about everything but the raid while raiding. Once you've got the basics down the raids aren't that hard any only require the occasional call out, eg golgoroth gaze, got the relic etc. As for PvP not my favorite part either but that's cos I just suck at it, but playing pvp with friends makes a huge difference.

        • Man oh man I am going to have to say you do not play enough crucible to understand it or complain about it.Your quote " Hunters spamming Tripmine Grenades and Titans spamming the Fist of Havoc (Panic)" and "namely the 1000-Yard Stare" just shows you have no idea what you are talking about. Get some real hours of crucible under your belt and then I will listen. About the raids, just buy a damn mic. I am not trying to be an asshole but this is a social game as it was designed that way. I understand you choose to eat lunch by yourself but with this game, you need to pick a table. It is not that bad finding groups either. Yeah you will get the occasional "squeaker" group and "elitest asshole" group but its not that bad. This game actually has a good and helpful playerbase.

            • I read all of your post, and respect where you're coming from. All I'm really left wondering is why you don't buy a cheap chat mic($20)? I mean you sometimes you can have a great time without one, but it would be so much better, and more enjoyable for you if you had one.

Biggest problem I have with this is how you claim that 1000 yrd stare is so op. It's simply the easiest to aquire, good high impact sniper........if it didn't exist, there would be just as many sniper kills, just with eirene, or whatever other sniper. And about the raids.......every issue you have is just crybaby nonsense. I have no raid team & use lfg every week........and except for maybe hard mode oryx, there's no issue (or none that aren't super easy to address) First off, I have never, not once seen someone kicked for not having a spindle, or Tom, or whatever. People are going to give others at least the chance to use their stuff, unless they are just trying to use stupid weapons...(I did crota once with a guy who literally used nothing except nlb for the entire raid). And about the light level reqirements.......so what? People can make whatever post they please, and require what ever they want............but pro-tip, guess what has no reqirements? Making your own stupid raid group post on lfg.........When you make your own post, you are just saying you are looking for others to join your group......it dosent mean that you automatically are required to lead that group. You are just making excuse after excuse, when you should just nut up, grab your controller, and phone, and just go raid.......it's really just that simple. And dude, get a mic already Seriously, ain't nobody got time for that nonsense. You need to be able to communicate, especially if you are inexperienced with the raid mechanics..........really, you are only making everyone in the group have a worse time playing the game just because you are too stubborn, or whatever to go buy a cheap ass mic.

Coming from another solo player(have only done KF once), i agree about the endgame raid only stuff. I've managed to get my hunter to 312~ and my warlock/titan are pretty close to 310 i'd imagine. However, speaking practically, it'll probably never diverge from that formula. On another note: you really should invest in a mic if you plan to keep playing multiplayer games. Doesn't have to be expensive. I'm still using the same 60$ turtle beach headset i bought back when Mw3 came out.

Have you tried lfg.com and lfg.net? If your not willing to give it a shot (also the mic thing is kinda on you) you can't really complain. I do agree with you on trials; I think that a fix would be that if you get to the lighthouse, you can't play anymore for the week. Go play skirmish after a successful trials run. Stop preventing the rest of us from getting there. As far as the raids go, if you are proficient playing any position, it shouldn't be a problem finding a team on one of those webpages. I can get on there anytime, anyday and have a raid up and running in 30 minutes.

                          • Firstly crucible I started out as purely pve but am now mostly pvp. If it wasn't for crucible I'd have left destiny. I'm in no way a great player but I use hand cannons, scouts, pulses and autos for bounties and I generally do ok with all of them. I also use sidearms and again do ok, although I do believe snipers need changes. I agree trials brings out the worst in people and the game however no one can "spam fist of havocs". Generally you'll get your super 3 times in a match. That's hardly spamming. People complain about foh yet you generally get fewer kills than any other super with it (except defender). Raids I pretty much agree with you on this, I rarely raid and when I do its because I feel I have to. It's a shame you didn't get the 320 ghost from crimson doubles because as soon as you're over 300 you get the chance of 310 exotics and can spam 3 of coins to get you to 310
