Fair point, it would make more sense aesthetically anyway, if it was a shader. Taken helmet with voidfang vestments would look awkward

Exactly. Of course, on the other hand, we already know how Bungie can be about armor color schemes (Twilight Garrison, year 1 exotic armor pieces, etc. not changing with shaders) so if it really is the armor itself, I'm going to be a lot more disappointed.
