To be "taken" requires a living host. Gear is inanimate. "Taken" Armor then would basically ignore one of the most basic parts of the Taken King story and would make absolutely no sense. A shader, on the other hand, makes perfect sense, because theoretically (if you're trying to fit it into the story) it could have been developed as a way to infilitrate the enemy and learn more about them or sabotage them from the inside.
If you're right though it just continues the tradition of story meaning absolutely nothing in this game.

It would make sense with the vex armor
-
Only if you could recover pieces of dead Taken Vex. The problem with that is that when you kill taken enemies, they get pulled back to wherever the were pulled when they were Taken. Somewhere in the game it mentions that the Taken don't die, they just return to where Oryx made them. That being tbe case, there'd be no physical taken vex parts to recover and use as armor. Now, if the vex armor contains vex consciousness like the ahamkara armor pieces contain the essence of the worms, then it MIGHT be possible to use a Taken process on it, but i think that theory is a bit of a stretch.
-
Im saying the vex armor is alive already. So it becoming some form of taken armor makes sense.
-
The thing is though, we know the armor infected Kabr. But was it the armor itself that was alive, or did the living fluid from the mind cores seep into the armor? It's an important distinction that we just don't know the answer to.
-
Either way something is alive right?
-
Not necessarily. That's a pretty deep question about the nature of life itself vs. collective consciousness/artificial intelligence. That discussion is probably too much for the forums here, heh.
-
Well i think it would work but either way they are just shitting on the crota and poe armor
-
We couldn't have just crafted dark gray gear, to blend in as you said
-
Maybe, but the specific Taken particle effects are more what i find an issue with. Of course all of this is meaningless speculation until the update hits.
-
I would think we would have the tech to replicate those effects.
-
Which would make the most sense for a shader, i think, rather than individual armore pieces. I don't claim to have the absolute correct answer, like i said, we just have to wait and see. But i do think a shader makes the most sense from both a story perspective and a Bungie development perspective. Occam's Razor, essentially.
-
Fair point, it would make more sense aesthetically anyway, if it was a shader. Taken helmet with voidfang vestments would look awkward
-
Exactly. Of course, on the other hand, we already know how Bungie can be about armor color schemes (Twilight Garrison, year 1 exotic armor pieces, etc. not changing with shaders) so if it really is the armor itself, I'm going to be a lot more disappointed.
-
Taken Ghost?
-
Without any lore explaining how a ghost could look taken, i would have to assume that shells are just the ghost equivalent of shaders. It doesn't say anywhere in the lore whether a ghost has any actual life force, so can a ghost actually become Taken? We don't know.
-
It's a shell. Like a shader.

Destiny needs more people like you, sir. Thank you for this post.
No, really, seeing people that pays attention to the lore and what's being said in the game is rare.

Seriously, everyone else that reads this: PAY ATTENTION TO THE LORE!
-
I love the lore. I'm always disappointed that so much of it is only in the grimiore and not represented just a little more in tbe game itself. Such a rich, living universe and it's barely in the game itself.
-
But vex are also taken.
-
Vex mind cores are biological, remember? So most vex are living beings, more or less.
-
You sir are correct.
-
I do follow my lore pretty close, heh.
-
I'm too lazy to read the grimoires, actually I'm too lazy to read at all.
-
*shrug* I'm not even mad. All's good.

Spiderman symbiotic suit????
