"free" has a special meaning when it comes to bungie games as of late
bungie makes a game, hacks off over half of it and then stretches that content across 2 years as paid DLC and "free" content updates. In general they only release it slowly over time to reduce the amount of trade-ins of the game that cannibalize new game sales for them. They also release DLC so that used game buyers have to send money to bungie as well.
bungie blocks matchmaking on high reward activities just to motivate players to bring new buyers to the game
bungie is as transparent as a block of coal with regard to its development, partially due to activision telling them to stop saying alarming things that will make the stock value drop, but mostly because bungie is engaging is pretty egregious skinner box mechanics, DLC strategies and burnout loot grinds which make most of their plans seem antagonistic to their players.
nobody needs to be "thankful" for game content they already paid for. they question why they didn't get it when they first bought it, as well as many other questions. Peeps like OP are exactly how bungie wishes everyone would embrace their money making strategies. Bungie is out for their own best interests and is doing the bare minimum for maximum financial benefit. Bungie was flabbergasted by the relatively low metacritic that denied them their bonuses. They are out of touch as well.

Grats, you just described corporate America. Profits; check, making shareholders happy; check, doing enough to retain customers without cutting into profits; check.
