If the story missions were more fun and challenging, I think it would matter less. The way things are, the raids are the only dynamic missions in the game. Most of the others are still... Go to X, stop, kill Y in the exact same way as you've done a thousand times over. It wouldn't be so bad if the enemies were more varied and the strategies exactly the same. Take Bungie's Halo games which were phenomenal. P.S. Lol for the spoiler.
