When I say crutch, I don't mean the weapons you think other people use because they "don't have skill" or "can't use something else". What I mean is what weapons do you like to pull out when you're in a pinch? What can you always rely on to get the job done?
For me, I have three different play styles, so I have a small list of crutches.
Gunslinger:
Ace of Spades
In pve, I know that when I'm outnumbered, I know that I can rely on Ace of Spades to take some of those numbers down. In pvp, I can at least know that I'll be at my most accurate with it than any other hand cannon. I can usually down a guardian in three quick shots or one shot and a throwing knife.
Defiance of Yasmin
I would say that this is my most accurate sniper rifle. It's very stable, the scope has a wide view, and I would assume that the aim assist isn't half bad. With this, I know that I'm more likely to get some quick headshots.
Super Good Advice
What can I say? It shoots fast, it hits hard, and I don't have to reload. It doesn't matter if I'm mowing down minions of darkness, bosses, or guardians. I know Super Good Advice will get the job done.
Bladedancer:
Zhalo Supercell/Suros Regime
With Zhalo, being outnumbered isn't much of a problem. In pve, I can easily mow down my enemies. With Suros Regime, it's always nice to have a little range when my usual loadout consists of close quarter weapons. Plus, it can heal.
Burden of Proof XI
With this shotgun, I was lucky enough to get rescue mag and replenish on it, so getting ammo is almost never an issue. Since it also kills at a decent range, it's absolutely perfect.
Raze Lighter
If I come across any annoying majors, I know this sword will destroy them for me.
Nightstalker:
Not Like The Others
The roll I got with this scout rifle helps with stability and aim assist, so getting precision hits is easier, especially when I combine it with Radiant Dance Machines. Mida might take its place one day, but I'm still trying to get out of this stupid mindset I have with the meta.
Telesto
In pve, it's great for groups and it generates orbs of light for my team, so chaining supers is a little easier. In pvp, I'm able jump and shadestep in many directions while relying on the fast charge rate and explosive shots to deal constant damage.
I don't really have anything on heavy weapons since rocket launchers do about the same thing.

Red death, hung jury and mida. Red death I have used pretty much constantly since I dropped it year 1 so I would say it's my real crutch.
