Actually you distribute when you can't add the numbers in the parentheses, i.e., 2(2x+1). However, when the numbers are able to be added, i.e., 2(2+1), you'd add the inside numbers and then multiply. [spoiler]P.E.M.D.A.S dude[/spoiler]
