Grimoire shows experience with a wide variety of the game. Experience can improve skill, but they are not the same. For example, my friend is two rumble wins away from max grimoire on the Xbox. I'm missing about 120 grimoire, all from the crucible. We are about the same in pvp skill, despite him having much more experience than me.
