If you are having lots of assists, you need to either improve your precision, or find a more powerful weapon.
I find that using stronger weapons, and more accurately, reduces the number of assists that I have. You cannot totally eradicate assists, but you can look at your own style and tweak it a little.

I get lots of assists because of connection shenanigans. e.g. I shoot someone and they get killed by someone else before my damage registers. I frequently get assists with sniper headshots, golden gun, etc. I once tossed a nova bomb on a control point and got 6 assists, even though the super did more than 300 damage to each player.
