The Bismuth Temple, Fields of Glass, Mercury. Switch had been stripped of almost everything he cared about. He had been cast out of the city, forced out of his home, the only home he had ever known, the home he had soley sworn to protect until his last life. All of it was gone, harshly and unjustly taken from him. As for the city itself, much of it laid in ruins, strewn with the corpses of guardians and innocent civilians alike. The city needed all the help it could get, and Switch was no longer permitted to provide that help. And there was only one name to blame: Aries. While trying to defend the city from him, and in the process of also trying to thwart his ability, Aries had almost entirely corrupted Switch's very being and essence. He had tried to stop Aries by recombining him with all the abominations he had birthed and then killing him, but it had failed. He departed before the process was complete, and in doing so, Switch had absorbed the entirety of Aries' sorrow. Now, darkness ebbed and flowed throughout his body, weaving between plating and joints and wiring. It felt like some parasite crawling under his skin, penetrating his mind and thoughts, tainting his very soul. And of course, there was the voice... Switch wasn't so sure who's voice it was. Aries? Sorrow? The darkness itself? Regardless, it was quiet but menacing, always lurking in the back of his mind. Switch was always used to knowing what was going on with himself and around him, such is the way of a Warlock. But this was entirely unexplainable. He and Aries didn't even have much of a history, yet Switch had been chosen to bear this curse. It didn't make any sense to him. Why him at all? It all boiled back to a simple crash. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Fate and luck couldn't have unfolded worse. Although, there was a faint glimmer of hope on the horizon. The process of becoming a dark guardian was reversible, at least for Switch. Difficult, but not impossible. He had managed to store and protect his light somewhere far from Aries' clutches, somewhere he would never be able to touch, no matter how far he reached. But, he would have to fully purge himself of darkness before returning to his own light. Perhaps what shocked Switch the most was how easy it was to gain a hold of his dark abilities once he had them. Within moments of being corrupted he was already capable of fully manipulating Aries' abominations. It had felt almost natural, like second nature, which was horrifying just to think about. It was almost like he was meant to be bestowed with this... Gift? No, this was certainly a curse. Switch had been hiding on Mercury, away from the city, away from the old and better life he once had. He had decided to stay at the Bismuth Temple: a massive Vex structure the size of a metropolis, floating kilometres above the scorched surface that was the fields of glass. He was outside the temple near the edge, just lying down in the sun's heat, tossing and turning in his own despair. Aries had broken everything, except his will. Switch knew that this ordeal was far from over: that Aries was still out there and likely amassing more allies, perhaps even corrupting more guardians. Switch's will however was unphased. He was going to fight on behalf of the city regardless, even if it had spat him out like poison when he needed it most. But he needed guidance to cope with his curse. Guidance from someone who was familiar with the ways of the darkness; someone who he could rely on; someone who could teach him restraint; someone like Erik. ((Indub, and anyone else if they want to join Smokey's story arc))
told you it was looooong
• Erik and Knox had been looking for Switch for a while. In the meantime, Erik had been busy gathering an army to repel Aries. He had also Taken Knox, by request, so he could be ready enough for the final battle. At first, Erik denied, saying it wasn't worth it, until Knox had persuaded him into doing it. He hadn't taken the transformation well, and he was extremely different now. Knox had changed, both in mentally and physically. He now looked for Switch on his own, by request from Erik. Not a request, really, but an order. Now that he was Taken, Knox had to obey both Erik and Oryx, though he had free will. His ship landed on Mercury, in the desolate, mechanical landscape, as his newfound powers granted him the ability to sense both Light and Darkness.

Jaden, one of Switch's closest friends, was also on Mercury, and was more or less trying to comfort Switch in light of recent events while also helping him to cope and come to realisation about who he now was. Switch was still lying down outside, atop the temple. He was looking far out over the Mercurian horizon, deep in thought, when Jaden approached him. J: "hey buddy. Still up here, huh? Enjoying the hot gale force winds and razor sharp sand grains? Sounds like a vacation of a lifetime" S: "mhmm..." J: "quite the place you found us to stay at. The view here is practically something to die for. Ah, this'll never get old..." S: "I hope it does. For both our sakes" Jaden sat down besides Switch, his legs casually hanging off the edge of the platform. A multi-kilometre drop lingered beneath his feet as they swung in the wind. As for Switch, he was still deep in thought. He could feel something oddly familiar yet unfamiliar at the same time, prancing at the back of his mind. He couldn't stop thinking about Zaaria either, for some reason. Like he had some lingering want to go out and find her.

  • Both Jaden and Switch shot to their feet in response to hearing the cry echo throughout the massive temple. The hairs stood up on the back of Jaden's neck. J: "I thought you said no one ever came here! Too dangerous n' shit, remember?!" S: "I did! No one comes here, ever! But this is wierd though... I feel like I know who it is..." J: "Say what?" S: "Its difficult to explain... Like I know who it is, yet I've never met them before..." J: "Yeah... You're drunk. For sure"

  • Knox heard them and started searching for the source of the voices. "It's me, Knox! Friends with Erik!"

  • Though Knox was effectively invisible, shielding himself from Jaden, Switch could still sense his dark presence. S: "we know you're there, Knox-- or at least I do, rather. We're not going to hurt you... Unless of course, you were planning that for us"

  • S: "I need his guidance now that I have to deal with these new... Abilities, of mine. Some aspects have been easy to control, but others not so much. I need advice from someone far more akin to the darkness than I am, and well. Erik fits that bill"

  • "I think I can find him. If I try hard enough..." Knox focused on Erik, and a picture rippled in his mind. The same image he was seeing now. "What the...?" Erik brushed past Knox and pulled Switch into a tight hug. 'Thank Oryx...' He realized what he was doing and took a step back, clearing his throat. 'Good to see you. Switch. Jaden.'

  • J: "I'd like to see you try, pegboy" S: "Jaden, don't. We've got more important things to attend to" J: "Fine. I'll uh, check up on the ship. You three can just continue your canoodling however you like" Jaden walked off to the makeshift hangar within the temple, leaving Switch and the others alone.

"You're joking, right? The queen and Taniks? Erik, You would've had me sold with just one of those names on our side. Good, we'll definitely need their help. Are you sure we can trust both those assets though?"

  • "Well, we've had a...special relationship. If you know what I mean. Mara, I mean. Not Taniks." Erik shuddered. 'It wouldn't be that bad...'
