This is my idea for a new loot system when it comes time for a new raid.
Rather than just getting random loot drops you would have to acquire the materials from the raid then take it to the vanguards to be assembled. (No waiting period though)
For example, you have to collect the raid materials then turn them into the vanguard with like 15 armor materials or the gunsmith with weapon parts and some motes of light. This would be cool. You would also be able to determine which armor piece or weapon you got possibly. Or instead of picking the piece you could choose the stat role. If they did this for the next raid people would go nuts for it I think.
You guys give some input. It would be appreciated.
Edit- The point was brought up of light level. I believe the best method would be to drop it at the raids minimum level and have it require more materials to upgrade it to the maximum light. The material would be similar to etheric light in a sense.
On another note- This is just an idea. I don't think they should change the current loot system unless the community would genuinely like this new method.
Edit 2-(Multiple character solution)
Destiny already has class specific loot so this could be accomplished. Rather than their being just one type of material to develop the gear you will receive a drop based on the class your are running. Hunters, Warlocks and Titans will each have a class specific armor material.
(Over grind/to quick upgrading issue)
Instead of implementing one material for all items there would need to be a material for each specific armor slot and weapon slot. The method to prevent people from maxing out in a short period of time would be this. Each part of the raid would contain four slot specific raid materials. Similar to how the raid currently drops certain items at certain points. (war priest drops heavy weapons)
Example- Part one would supposedly offer scout rifle parts, boot parts, chest parts and machine gun parts.
As someone proposed already. To craft each item you would need to get (insert number) to craft a piece of gear. Say you need three pieces of materials for a pair of gauntlets. The number of materials required would depend on the availability of them from the raid. If for example, the war priest, golgoroth and the daughters all dropped gauntlet parts then you would need three parts to craft the item. The same would go for all gear. Guns and armor alike.
Also, there could be a feature implemented so that you would be able to 'extract' parts from a combination of your other parts. Say you acquired a helmet part and chest part, but you really need gauntlets. You would be able to combine and extract the part you need from the two materials. This would make it possible to get something from 'nothing.'

I propose a mix of your idea and raid drops. Use the raid shards as currency. 50 shards for a piece of armor. 5 Shards can be used to raise the light level of any item (raid, iron banner, vendor gear) 1 point.
