One: Destiny is not most games, understood. However, no, time gating is NOT that common of a practice. Quests and their rewards are assumed to be included in the purchase upon launch.
Two: They were advertised just as much as other content. I don't understand how one does not classify a trailer as advertising, but I guess that's up to you. Under most sane people's books, if content is mentioned, talked about, shown/displayed in trailers, in a companies specific database for public eyes, etc... It's expected to be included and if not, it has been cut and should be signified as being cut.
Three: Game modes are "time gated" actually. We can only play mayhem when they choose to let us, among other things. Regardless; the only difference between these two forms of content is that one must be earned and the other is supplied. To many people, nine exotic armor pieces had more value and is more of a piece of "base" content than a crucible map. They aren't different. Both are content. They BOTH significantly affect the value of an expansion and play a major role in the purchase of said expansions. No, they aren't they exact same thing, but in terms of value, that is entirely subjective. I consider gear to be one of the most important aspects of an MMO and when it is withheld, I am just as angered as I would be if a crucible map was withheld (WHICH. DID. HAPPEN. The map they finally added in during festival of the lost). So it's Oh so preposterous, yet it happened with both that map and to an extent game modes, just on a smaller scale, one map and not two or three. So it doesn't matter right?
Your argument against mine is what is invalid. Time gating is not a common practice, the exotics WERE advertised, "basic" content HAS been time gated (crucible map and game modes), and these two examples hold the same value. The only way the two subjects could be any more comparable would be if they were the same thing; EVERY other variable was identical.
