I understand your feelings but I think the key comes down to your definition of grind and enjoyment. If you only enjoy the game by having the best stuff then the grind is a barrier to enjoying the game and the upgrade cycle is an annoying waste of time. If you enjoy playing the game for its own intrinsic reasons and less on having the best stuff then it becomes a non issue. I think it's easy to lose track of just enjoying playing games and focus on extrinsic things like collecting stuff although everyone is different and it is nice to have a carrot to chase!
I also think after a month or more of solid play most people start to become a little jaded by any game. The content has been well and truly experienced so unless you really love the basic game mechanics and experience you will move onto something else. I have taken 2 large breaks from burning out on destiny and ended up coming back. It's a great chance to play something else and ,say what you will about bungievision and Edit- their pricing model, it will still be there should you want to try it out again! Good luck.
