Interestingly enough, the first time I quit playing Destiny (last year around this time, when all the other great games come out), I had a similar experience. I booted up Shadow of Mordor, and the next thing I knew, I was saying, "you know what, I'm glad I'm not grinding Destiny every day." I definitely think that the lack of any form of team-finding/matchmaking/lfg/etc. in-game hurts it for a lot of people. I don't have enough people on my friends list or time to do LFG each night, so I can't raid during the week, really. If I could, I would feel like I had a lot more to do in the game (at least until I got fed up with getting mouldering shards constantly). But the biggest thing really is the amount of grinding you need to do. I understand that this is the type of game I signed up for, but it's definitely one of those things where when you stop for a breather, you realize that it's really fun to occasionally play other games for which there isn't the same amount of grind.
