The Traveler fought nothing. It expects others to do all the work, then runs.
It did that to the Fallen when the Darkness came, and tried to do that to us- until the extinction event plan setup by the Warminds shot it.

"Do all the work" Pray tell, what kind of work done by obvious lesser beings could benefit something like the Traveler?

The Traveler grants them powers and sets them on a path of fake rules (the Light way). It is a puppet of sorts that gets societies to join the light (Read the conversation between the three daughters of the Osmium King and the Leviathan for more on that). Its not all known to us, but the Light benefits in someway through this.
