It's set up like an MMO and the loot system is like an MMO.
The only difference is that they replaced the RPG with FPS.

Destiny can't hold more than 9 people in one instance, and let's be real, six is really the number. That's not massive, Destiny really isn't an MMO at all. I think you are confusing the RPG elements that MMOs also share with the actual thing that makes an MMO what it is, the massive number of players in a single instance.

It's easy to see this was intended to be an MMOFPS but had to have the first M scrapped due to Bungie's inadequate technology, poor coding skills, lack of dedicated servers, etc.
