Nothing in destiny is earned except for quest exotics or black spindle. A majority of it is RNG like how the guy who went 1 and 15 in pvp and got a legendary or a friend who joined a nightfall at the end and got an exotic. I remember I saw a guy join in a pvp match I was in a few months ago, he went like 3 and 6 and got a gjallahorn lol.
