I agree that it's a strategy. If you DPS the shit out of a boss because a next wave of adds spawn if you don't kill him, are you avoiding a game mechanic? I'm damn sure not going to say, "wait, don't kill him yet... Bungie wanted us to fight these adds!" Killing something to avoid adds is the same as not killing something to avoid adds. But to each his own.
