Yeah -- there's actually a hint of romance between them in the game. It's a wee bit more obvious in TTK.

Actually, Variks is kinda fed up with Petra and gives her intel and missions in an effort to get her killed. She knows this and still accepts him. Its in the grimoire. Looks like they skipped the romancing stage and went straight to marriage status. (Hope my wife doesn't see this.)
