If the traveler "wasnt" going to leave us then why did Rasputin shoot at it and cripple it...

Who knows? He obviously inferred that it was the right thing to do to protect as much of humanity as possible. Perhaps he knew it would push back the Darkness. Perhaps he incorrectly simulated the Traveler leaving. Light and Dark throw a kink into simulations, after all
