They pretty much completely scrapped the original story and started from near scratch

Yes that's what they said. But high chance they keep the elements of the early story. Meaning that we will see Chicago and the European Dead Zone and stuff.

Gameplay elements, yes, they kept. The Dreadnaught is proof of this. But much of the lore was tossed out the window

Let's hope the new story will give us goosebumps like it gave us with the Halo story then.
