-I was originally going to post this as a reply to "xbob lv" but as I've typed so much I felt as if it would get lost and no one would bother reading it. There is a TL;DR at the end for those of you that don't want to read all of this.
It builds anticipation because before Bungie started doing it, everyone thought that finding out how to get these exotics was in THEIR power. But it's not. I waited patiently and hoped for weeks while reading the subreddit for Sleeper Simulant that someone someday soon would figure out how to get it. Then one day I get on the computer and see all these stories about "Hey you can now do this quest related to SS!" and then the NEXT DAY something similar: "Hey you can now get the SS!"
It's just not a good way of rewarding us for a part of the game we thought was going to be an exciting hunt filled with loads of secrets and clues scattered throughout the lore and game files. It was exciting to get the SS after waiting so long, but it felt too easy to get. It's also really not that great of a weapon. The best use I found for it was in Iron Banner, although even then most people would use a rocket launcher instead.
Don't get me wrong, I like that Bungie is trying something new with exotics, and I like that it isn't about random drops anymore. I just don't agree with this way of doing it. The hunt for Sleeper Simulant was a raging HYPETRAIN that ended in a fiery blaze of disappointment due to the use of the timegating.
TL;DR: Timegating builds you up and then shuts you down. It's a disappointing way of gaining exotics.
