I feel like they just used the nightstalker bug as an excuse to delay trials. Why the -blam!- dont they also close iron banner which is supposed to be competetive too

Um, maybe because by the time the glitch was well known enough to be widespread, Iron Banner had already been going on for a day or so? They weren't going to stop the event after it started. The same way they didn't shut down Trials mid-weekend when the Golden Gun/Swarm Grenade glitch was discovered.
