Not entirely correct. They're from the pre-launch Alpha Lupi augmented reality game, and Bungie sources them from world mythology and religion. Go figure. They're called geomantic figures. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geomantic_figures

Beyond their use in the Alpha Lupi event, the only significance these symbols have in the current iteration of Destiny is aesthetic purposes and design. Right?

I am not Bungie, so I do not know. :) I would put on my spinfoil hat, but all the dead ends from SS lead me to believe it's just not worth looking that deep into something like that.
