Micro-transactions in paid games made GTA5 very successful, same for Borderlands 2.

If a player feels they're getting enjoyment out of a paid or free game then they'll be far less against paying to increase their enjoyment even if it's purely cosmetic. As a business owner you always want to look for ways to increase revenue. People really won't pay for something if they feel it does't offer value in any way.
