Bungie doesn't seem to get that Auto rifles should be powerful to the close - mid ranges (depending on the stats). An auto rifle should kill faster in a close range encounter then a scout, hand cannon, or pulse rifle simply because they have the disadvantage against these weapons at longer ranges where range and accuracy drop off render them useless against the long range weapons. Bungie intentionally made small maps that heavily favour close-mid ranges, intentionally removed the big maps that contained large spaces where long range weapons were needed, and then nerfed auto rifles because they were used the most often. Do they not understand how maps force players to evolve?
