• How will it stop alts? You could just make another account if you own destiny.

Shacker, I know you've been behind 100% of the community posts I've made so far, so I'm interested to hear what you think of what I have to say now. (Disclaimer: It's late, and this is my first impression on everything that's going on right now, so bear with me bro) I'm all about forward progression. I can completely see why Bungie would want to try and phase out alts, and keep their forums open to those who have played their most recent title. With that being said, for those of us who have been around for games earlier than that, those who have had ACCOUNTS LINKED before now, do you not see some exception being made for those few people? Why should someone who has a one year account, with a linked tag that's played destiny but hidden from public view, take precedence over someone who has a 5+ year account publicly linked with Halo legacy stats attached? Are they not worthy simply because they haven't played the newest title? Does their existence on these forums, previous to this title not count for something? What if SonicJohn, CAVX, or Yoozle decided to show up, and post again, but couldn't because they haven't played Destiny? Not at all trying to condescend or have any type of a tone, but I am certainly a little upset with this ruling. I'm absolutely not trying to project at you at all either, and have a huge respect for what you have to say, so in turn, I say this to you to see your response. Much love for putting up with my crap bro. (m) TWP 4 lyfe.

Hey, man. I don't know about any exceptions, and I don't know if that was or could be a viable option. From DeeJ's post it was clear to me they want to move forward into a new era and also patch a system which made it far too easy for members to operate under a posture of zero accountability. I really don't think it has anything to do with being worthy or not. The team that made the new policy reviewed the data and that data supported the decision. I think it could have been handled differently, but I have nothing to do with anything policy execution related. Due to the new policy, many members will be inclined to act and post with more caution because bans will hold more weight now. Much less than 1% of active members didn't have an account linked to a Guardian with Destiny play history. And a percentage of those very likely played Destiny, and all they need to do is link their accounts (I came across two legacy members who were able to get squared away yesterday). Could it have been handled differently? Probably, but something had to happen and the benefits outweigh the negative impact. Stay cool. #GetWorkPLaced

After the initial emotions have subsided I'm seeing this much more clearly now. This kind of a clean up move has been a long time coming, I'm preaching to the choir by saying that. I think more than anything, it just felt like another really insensitive rollout, and I'll admit, I probably over reacted. Thanks for the reply Shacker, always good to hear from you.

  • I'm feeling the same way too. Last night I had a really hard day and came home to this, so suddenly. I kind of let my emotions take over and I rampaged last night which was very immature; even though I made a few valid points. There's a lot of ways around this and I feel pretty bad for the older members, who given the circumstances, have no way to link their accounts. This won't stop serious troller's, but it should at least clean up the forums a little bit. Next I'd really like titles brought back and to have stricter moderation like the old days. At that point, nobody will even want to have alts pretty much.

  • It was abrupt, for sure. And I truly hope the negative impact is as minor as anticipated.

  • I don't feel like reading all 47 comments, so I'll just assume you agree with bungies choice. I've had quite a few frequent members come to me cause they "can't post". I don't see the point in not allowing older members post in the mains if they never played Destiny. Not everyone has the money nor the want for consoles or games anymore, does that mean they shouldn't be allowed to post on the forum they've had access to for 7+ years now? If you think that okay then I'm not sure what to tell you. I can give easy fixes for said -blam!- ups and things that even a 10 year old could think of. Why not grandfather in all the older members and this rule only go for new accounts? Even if this still restricts the new members of this community it doesn't screw over all the older people that I think make this forum enjoyable. I'm interested to hear your thoughts.

Like I told Jailbot, I don't know if exceptions or grandfathering was possible. Many folks assume this was an option and have no clue how the backend of the forum system architecture works. I don't know either which why I don't assume grandfathering was an option. I do feel the benefits for the greater health of the community greatly outweigh the negative impact.

Unless there are legal concerns between Bungie and 343i that somehow go beyond the current agreements, I don't see how grandfathering couldn't have been an option. This is all just information in a database. And grandfathering would only require a simple query that referenced the data that they already own and have possession of. If I couldn't click on my profile right now and view my Halo stats, then I would tend to lean more toward the position of "it's probably just not possible". But the info is there. Bungie has it on their servers, within their databases. So this means that there are zero technical limitations in this situation. And I seriously doubt 343i and Bungie came to a legal agreement years ago that said "Okay.. Bungie gets to keep all that data.. but they can't use it for anything but legacy stats and avatars". That just doesn't make sense to me. I'm sure they had their reasons for this decision, but it wasn't because they couldn't do it.

  • Adding meaningful features that don't upset or exclude members for enjoying Bungie beyond their latest game. Creating an environment that isn't slowly becoming only destiny and is truly about making friends and playing games.

  • They could have left gaming and off topic alone, and given you guys the tools to actually moderate again. The mute function was a broken function from its inception. The problem wasn't just isolated to these "alt" accounts with no destiny account attached to it. There are thousands, if not close to a million, spam, flaming, naming and shaming, off topic, porn, and other against the COC related threads in the destiny forum. They stay there even with this new "rule set" it won't change. The only way to actually change it would be to enforce the rules with moderation.

  • You'll eventually get banned, but the moderation team is terrible. One of nubbins pictures last 3-4 days untouched.

  • I don't think there would be outlash if there was a age gap/limit on it. Say you are a 7 year member, you can post in #gaming and #offtopic, but nowhere else, unless you play destiny and link it. I think it would just be a win-win situation. Bungie would have a much smaller #offtopic lashback, making alts would be much more time consuming, and we all win. I agree to a extent with what Bungie is doing, but I can sympathize with people who want to still post without buying destiny.

  • That's an excellent point. I'm not sure why they chose to handle this how they did. Being in information technology (IRL) I can only think the data they analyzed supported their decision.
