Actually it goes both directions and can go from cloud to cloud. Look up ball lightning it will freak you out.

Yeah, electricity is pretty mental. I was mostly mentioning it because the classic lightning bolt that most think of does in fact come from the ground, and that's the exact opposite of the post I replied to.

Sorta. The return strikes, which you see, do come from the ground. The first bolt goes from the cloud.
