Rengad did not accompany Toland into the Hellmouth on that fateful day because Toland told him if anything happened he needed to continue their work in secret apart from the tower until the vanguard was ready to accept their knowledge. When Rengad heard what happened he fled the tower and searched for Toland in hopes he survived. All he found was a copy of the journal and a note saying "I am alive and well but I cannot say where I am recovering and will soon be well one day my friend we will reunite and our power will be unstoppable" Rengad has since spent his days living on the moon learning everything he can about the Hive and he was the one who sensed Oryx and warned Eris because he knew the information had to come from someone reliable. Rengad believes at his core that when Toland comes back they will bless the vanguard with their collective knowledge and usher in a new Golden Age fueled by dark magic and Hive secrets. The only connection Rengad has to the outside world is Dead Orbit who has been secretly supporting him and helping his research Rengad is an influential member of Dead Orbit and was once considered to become an Arach but after Toland left Rengad became strange and moody which is why he lives by himself I hope you like it Toland is my favorite character and Hive lore is the best really want to learn more about them and their secrets
