It does seem completely out of order that they have acted like this. I bought destiny day 1. Loved it. Got bored after a couple of months of the sheer repetitiveness of the game and traded it. I have come back buying the legendary pack which gives me the base game and all 3 DLC content including the TTK. For me that was s decent deal. I don't understand why on earth they would punish their most loyal customers however and lock all that they were enjoying behind a paywall. It should be a choice to purchase TTK. Not a necessity!
