As I've said elsewhere, Destiny is part product and part service. Y1 players have access to all of their product (missions, strikes, raids) but have lost access to services (weekly curated playlists, crucible curated playlists, etc). In your example, it may be your lawnmower, but if you hire someone else to use your lawnmower to cut your grass, then you need to continue to pay them. Players who only purchased the base game have received a year of support.
• And subsequently lost: - play strikes above level 20 - specifically play Control, - specifically play Clash - specifically play Skirmish - specifically play Salvage - specifically play Rumble - story missions that you pick above their original level (i.e. A level 3 story mission cannot be dialed up to a level 20 or 32) - Nightfall Weekly and Daily heroic strikes - play Trials when that comes around - play Iron Banner when that comes around - buy legendaries from the factions - play the daily cruscible Quite a bit more than you realise. This is why people are pissed.

 • Well like the post I quoted say. It's sea to be a part content part service game. The strikes and Playlist you are losing is part of the service cost.
