Might I ask what you did for the majority of the time? I'm lost for what exactly to do or grind out.

every quest they give you at the end of most of them they give you better shit then you have and engrams

Literally Strikes. Reg or heroic. I know there are some exclusive legendaries on heroic that will help against taken. A lot of the blues I got kept going higher and higher in level.

Drops seem to be put in relation to your current light level. So you are 200 you get 207, 240 you get 249 and so on.
