Our ships use near-light speed tech (which is why everything is blue when you travel, the light is being blue-shifted), so might be something to do with creating artificial wormholes. They clearly have a cockpit and a main cabin, but no landing gear or pad, so they were never meant to land after being launched. Entry and escape are all done by a trans-material grid. Weapons are probably Glimmer-based, like our guns.
