As someone who's starting Game Development in college on Wednesday, it's been a rather tragic if at least enlightening rollercoaster with this franchise. The gamer and the artist in me laments everything that's happened, especially what could have been. But if nothing else, it's serving as a cautionary tale for future reference.
EDIT: At this point it wouldn't surprise me if Staten had a similar dispute with Activision, only far less public i.e. Activision did their damnest to bury the details so we'd never know.

My advice. Think like a professional athlete. Life is great until it isn't. Blow an ACL and see how much they love you. Be financially prepared to defend that contract in court. Mr. O'Donnell was ready and he won. I don't work for him. I am a CEO myself and I get it. I work for a company just like he did. I lay golden eggs just like he did. Work hard and be honest. Do your job. Be ready for other people to burn you.

Oh I've seen it time again from family and friends, there's always someone waiting to take you down a peg for their own gain. Sad but true.
