Sounds less like Bungie just gave us the middle finger and more like they were on Marty's side to begin with, but when Activision started putting more pressure on them they simply pulled down their pants and let Activision have their way with them. Marty didn't want to do that and Bungie got scared activision was gonna flip shit or something so they gave Marty the boot.
So in conclusion, I do not believe Bungie was being assholes, I believe they were being cowards.

Bungie wasn't being cowardly. They were being intelligent businessmen. They have a VERY lucrative contract with Activision. If they lost that contract, they would be in deep trouble, or outright doomed. It was one person, who had started stirring up trouble over a perceived slight, or run the risk of losing the company.

For them to break that contract can result in Bungie being completely removed from the Destiny franchise and a different company could replace them. 2. ) It's a 500 million dollar contract that will fund them for an entire decade. Any company out there would kill for a contract that funded them 500 million dollars and a hold them for a decade. You're going to abide that, and if you don't; result number one will happen. It's so black and white as people make it out to be.

I can see Luke smith being thrown money while pleasing Activision hence why he has a problem with the throwing of money.
