I don't believe the traveler is evil but good and evil are relative and perspective. It came here to hide, knew that it's enemy was coming and wants to consume all life and leave death in it's wake. So she, the traveler, used us and is using us as it's disposable army to defeat the darkness and preserve life. Right now the traveler is silent because it's wounded, healing and afraid. Afraid of losing again and afraid of it's own power.
