They and the constitution disagree with you. The supreme courts power is fairly broad. And how is a ruling on constitutional rights not within the supreme courts power? That is exactly what the federal court system is for.

They can rule laws as unconstitutional, which is exactly what they did. They ruled that the laws the states were creating that banned same sex marriage were unconstitutional.

They can rule them unconstitutional yes. However that ruling does not end the law.
