They shouldn't be forced its freedom of religion. Are they being held against their will? No, but people have already been taken to court for similar things and that is bullshit. They shouldn't be punished by the law for practicing their religion. There are tons of institutions that will marry gay people, the religious institutions shouldn't be forced to do this its against the constitution. I don't care if you're religious or not, this should be common sense.
Edit: Didn't see the part about the government clerk. My point still stands to religious institutions but if you're a government official you are obligated to follow the laws regardless

They should quit their jobs if they have to keep putting their religion into a state matter. Anyone and everyone who puts their religion before their civic duties as a state employee is unfit for their job.

Regardless of the edit or not, I don't see LGBT couples going to churches and asking to get married. I go to church every Sunday, and I haven't seen an LGBT marriage ceremony in the 15 years I've been here. The issue was that the government clerk was using the State's power to refuse marriage to LGBT couples. It was a blatant abuse of power, and the federal judge was justified in his actions to jail her (Even though it was a jerk move). It wasn't because her 1st Amendment rights were being violated, because they weren't. Religious institutions are exempt from this, since it violates their first amendment rights. I know LGBT couples will not ask the church to marry them, and I can support that. Religious churches are essentially private institutions, so they do have the right to refuse service to anyone. Religious institutions aren't under attack. This is just a typical case of Separation of Church and State and will probably be resolved in a couple of days or so.

If they're a government county clerk then by law, they have to issue marriage licenses to homosexual couples in addition to straight couples. It doesn't violate their religious freedoms because they aren't forced to do it; they can always quit if they disagree.

Religious institution cannot hand out marriage licenses which is what we're talking about. A business cannot deny you service based on religion, [b]orientation[/b] or race.

A business doesn't have to give a reason. Good luck proving that's the reason why.

A clerk has to give a reason why he/she denied a license to a couple that meets all the requirements. They can't just decide who gets it or not based on preference.

They reserve that right because they can go somewhere else to go get what they need. Same thing for marriage, religious institutions aren't the only ones that perform marriage ceremonies or joinings
