Actually the Rule of Two predates Darth Bane by quite a bit. (Although he did bring the practice back to the fore and give it a name.) Darth Rivan (not Revan) was the last known Darth before Señor Bane. Rivan settled on the world of Almas and constructed a fortress containing traps based on adherence to the Rule of Two.
Rivan did base his name off of historical texts on Darth Revan. They are two separate people, however, and it's not a typo.
These traps were inspired by Darth Revan's teachings on never training more than one apprentice. So while Bane did institute the Rule of Two in the new Order of Sith that he created the practice itself was based on much earlier teachings. He simply brought it back and enforced it. Harshly.

You're telling me stuff I already know man, trust me. The only pieces of Star Wars lore that I don't know inside out are the immediate post-galactic hyperspace war, and the Draggulch Period. The reason why I assume that Bane is the original creator of it now is because, if I remember correctly, practically all solid lore prior to the NSW is considered 'Legends', and in the cartoon, Bane explicitly says something about redefining the sith code, etc. I haven't even been keeping up with the universe like that (because of the eu destruction), so as far as my knowledge goes, Revan doesn't even 'exist' anymore.
