Part of the reasoning for leaving old Legendary equipment (and some Exotics) behind is to create variety (we shouldn't all be using the same thing). However by removing the opportunity to bring the old forward, they have reduced the list of weapons and armour that are practical to use. We will therefore see many people using the same "OP/Latest go to guns" from the new list. If we had the choice of old or new (and the new ones are viable compared to old) then we will get variety as some stick with old favorites and some move to the new. By banning the old they only raise concerns that the new weapons will be like HoW (do more base damage but are worse in almost every other way).

  • Indeed. Although, I say variety is only possible by adding new weapons which compliment what is already available instead of looking to compete with the old stuff to try and force players to switch up. I think them adding Swords to the game was a perfect example of such innovation. Now why they can't seem to keep on doing things like that just seems rather beyond my comprehension.

  • Yes good point. A submachine gun class of weapon would be a good option (although that is what they seem to be trying to make the Auto Rifle into). A shotgun is a shotgun whatever DLC it is from, the difference is in the detail of perks and stats. Unfortunately every update seems to concentrate on lowering impact and range, but increasing rate of fire. Great for PvP but rubbish in PvE. If they want us to use new weapons, they need to balance it like in vanilla (remember when there were two of each weapon type? One high impact low RoF and one low impact and high RoF) so that we can pick the one best suited to our play style and situation. Give us choice and people will choose different weapons. Restrict us to a small list and we will all use the same.

  • Yep, exactly. Hell, I liked the idea of an LMG where you use the Auto Rifle as a template. The LMG would be a Primary Class weapon with less impact than Hand Cannons but greater than all other primaries, with the trade off being horrible range and craptastic stability which requires immense player skill to compensate for. They'd also offset the horrible handling with a HUGE mag size so players can just sit there without care and keep that trigger squeezed for sheer barraging fun times. The idea first came to me when I was playing Crota's End with the movie Predator playing on the other TV. The mental image I got inspired the whole thing. *Endless waves of Hive swarming towards the group as they are running, two Guardians in the back turning around with LMGs letting loose a flurry of bullets into the advancing hordes* "HURRY! GET TO THE CHOPPER!!!" XD

  • Every weapon in the game (other than swords) should not really have to worry about range on the small maps they give us. It should be the accuracy that drops off with range and the impact and rate of fire should also affect the accuracy proportionally. A real 9mm bullet fired from a pistol is still lethal if it hits you at 200 meters (but try making that shot). A round from a 50 cal will drop you at long range easily, but try hip firing it at 10 meters at a swarm of enemies and see how well you do. So if Bungie dropped off accuracy (which is a current weapon stat) rather than damage over range, it would make much more sense. i.e. - Fire a Hand Cannon at long range, you might hit something and kill it, but you would probably use up all of your ammo to do so. - Fire a Hand Cannon at long range at a crowd, much more chance, but still pretty random what you hit. - Fire a Sniper Rifle at long range slowly, excellent chance of a kill. - Fire a Sniper Rifle at any range quickly and recoil should make it a nightmare. - Auto Rifle short bursts - reasonably accurate at most ranges. - Auto Rifle spray and prey - Wall of enemies close in good, target at range, kill lots of trees, rocks, etc. - MG pretty much like an Auto Rifle, controlled bursts you should be able to effectively kill at range. The above would work with your Hive Swarm. It makes no sense that half the heavy weapons in the game have the range of a shotgun (guess why Gally is so popular). I much prefer MGs to Rocket Launchers, but in a boss fight such a Crota or Aethon they are absolutely pointless.
