Toland's Whereabouts
Alright, let's take a look at an interesting card, [b]Ghost Fragement: Hive 4[/b].
This card is transcribed from a stolen copy of the journal of Toland, the Shattered, who chased the secret of Ir Yut and her Liturgy of Ruin. We assume this killed him, as Eris was the only known one to escape the Hellmouth. But perhaps he survived...
This card talks about Toland's hunt for four words, uttered by the Hive: Eir, Ur, Xol, and Yul. One particular line interests me very much:
[quote]Four sounds, oft repeated, but only four. [u]Though I am on the trail of a fifth, faintly heard from the buzz that once spilled from the Shrine—[/u][/quote]
This Shrine that Toland speaks of is, of course, the Shrine of Oryx. Except, Toland says that the buzz no longer spills from the Shrine. Now why would it do that? Unless it was perhaps destroyed...
But our Guardian destroyed the Shrine a good long time after Eris's fireteam disappeared into the Hellmouth. So how could Toland hear silence coming from the Shrine if we destroyed it after he succumbed to the Deathsong? That's just it: he didn't. Toland is still out there, studying the Hive. He learned the secret to the Deathsinger's song, and he still lives on the Lunar surface
Also, this card was released during The Dark Below. Could this have been foreshadowing for The Taken King? I know now his fifth word to be Akka, the god that was cut to pieces by Oryx, but still lives undiminished

I'm pretty sure it's during the Lost to Light mission. Has no one else heard this? Unless I misread the name, but I'm very certain it was Toland. I've played the mission through twice. Surely this means he is most certainely alive?

You're sneaking up behind him. Strangling superstar Shia Labeouf. Fighting for your life with Shia Labeouf, Wrestling a knife from Shia Labeouf, Stab it in his kidney. Safe at last from Shia Labeouf. You limp into the dark woods, Blood oozing from your stump leg. But you have won. You have beaten Shia Labeouf Wait! He isn’t dead! Shia surprise! There’s a gun to your head and death in his eyes. But you can do jiu jitsu… body slam Shia LaBeouf. Legendary fight with Shia LaBeouf. Normal Tuesday night for Shia LaBeouf. You try to swing an axe at Shia LaBeouf. But blood is draining fast from your stump leg. He’s dodging every swipe, he parries to the left. You counter to the right, you catch him in the neck. You’re chopping off his head now…. You have just decapitated Shia LaBeouf. His head topples to the floor, expressionless. You fall to your knees and catch your breath. You are finally safe from Shia LaBeouf.

1 ReplyThough interesting, I always assumed the hidden word wasn't Oryx. If you think about it, Oryx has been known about for decades, perhaps centuries. Osiris, who wasn't even a master of Hive lore knew and gave warnings of Oryx and Crota even before the great disaster on the moon. Toland, who was exiled even earlier than Osiris would surely know about oryx, at least by name, and therefore would be unlikely to miss him while investigating the whispers of the shrine. It's even called the shrine of Oryx. My theory is that Oryx is merely a general of sorts, he rules over the hive but serves greater masters. In a grimoire card, I forget which one, Toland speaks about the cunning strategy of masking yourself behind lesser beings. He says the greatest leaders do not reveal themselves and use their underlings like puppets and scapegoats. He also states that while the Hive cry out to some gods, they whisper to others. This leads me to believe that while being their king, Oryx is a scapegoat. The true masters of the hive are concealed and hidden and wish to remain so and perhaps the fifth name is the name of the darkness itself.

Toland and Osiris are my favorite parts of the lore. In normal crota, there is a room above the deathsinger where you can see and shoot her but she can't see you. There is an invisible wall blocking it but you can do some parkour to get their. My most recent run of crota, (nobody went up there because it's normal mode) after crota spawned, I saw something up there walking around. It looked like a gatekeeper. No doubt there was a gatekeeper up there. What if crota captured him, corrupted him, changed him and made him a gatekeeper after deathsinger found him? Maybe he was immune to the song because reasons untold (or space magic) so she brought him to crota. Crota saw the potential in this powerful warlock and he wanted that strength on his side. This is why gatekeeper doesn't come out of the pit in hard. Tolands spirit is fighting back, trying to escape and he doesn't want to hurt other guardians.

You're right. Toland probably escaped the Hellmouth; after all, he was the one that gave Eris Emerald Light, her means of escape. What is more important is whether his intentions now align with our own, after all, Osiris is/was (he might be dead) a hero, even after he left the City. In Toland's case, I feel he has lost his original desire, exposing a weakness in the Darkness, for seeking power regardless of it's source (like with Dredgen Yor). If he isn't serving the Darkness by now, he is looking for a way to grow more powerful whether it be through the Light or the Dark. Something tells me he might return as an ally in TTB, but only until Oryx is defeated. I wouldn't be surprised if, in his absence, Toland attempts to gain control over the Taken.

In [b]Darkness 3[/b] he references the killing word which is what I believe interested him. [b]The Shrine[/b] mission grimoire references multiple shrines so there could be more than one. He could also be a self reviving warlock so there is that, but as a Titan I am unsure of if that will kill you after the revive. Great piece.

7 RepliesWei ning will always be my favorite guardian only spoken of in the grimoire, but Toland and kabr are up there as well. While I will never meet ning, I hope Toland one day shows up as an important character.

4 RepliesToland should return in TTK. Since he's obsessed with the hive and all. Just imagine you fighting oryx and he just walks in and says: "Are you the God of the hive? Can I ask you some questions?"
