Why do the Awoken willingly live in the reef if the traveller offers the only real protection? Why did they hide there existence from us?

The Awoken are mysterious. They were born towards the end of the Collapse from the warring Light and Dark in the Asteroid Belt. Many of them, especially the Techeuns and the Queen herself, have been shown to have special powers.
