I understood that the humans were recovering nicely and that the Sanghelli were in a civil war. But most of the characters were entirely new to me and I still don't know a lot. Mostly Forerunner related info and why those rebel Covies even existed.

Well, most of those characters were brand new to begin with (excluding the Librarian and Didact). I think you should be fine with Halo 5.
