half of the problem (on the PvE side) is not our fault, but Bungie's.
They are quick to show us figures on how (made up example) 90% of Raid completions have consisted of Gjlallarhorn multiple times, figures on (another made up example) how many times the Devil Walker has been killed by Black Hammer and so on which suggests that these weapons are overpowered.
Look at it in this way...
Almost every single boss in the game will do an area of effect damage to you if you get close to it whether it be some shock waves, burning, or even just a one hit melee. This eliminates the use of exotic shotguns. Bosses such as Crota require your team to stand relatively far away from him when downing his shield meaning that people want a weapon that can hit from range without the chance of missing a few rounds. This eliminates the use of exotic heavy machine guns and highlights the use of exotic launchers. See where I am going? Now I am not saying it is impossible to beat Crota without a rocket launcher as it is far from it, but the mechanics in the game just hold your hand and allow you to nuke a boss from a safe distance with no complications IF you use a rocket launcher, hence the high numbers of people foaming over Gjallarhorn.
Here is an idea on how this problem could be fixed.
Imagine a boss arena where the boss does not do an area of effect attack when you get close, cannot one hit kill you with a melee, and uses an ability to draw Guardians closer to him/her when they try to run away. This immediately allows exotic shotguns to come in to play since you will be able to fight up close without having some kind of bullshit attack down you instantly. The same can be said for Auto Rifles as you will not face the damage drop off. This does limit the use of launchers, but doesn't make them useless. Now that the boss does not use an AoE attack, the Guardians up close can take the attention of the boss allowing another team member to get to a safe distance where the rocket will not cause the player any damage before getting dragged back.
Just a little idea off of the top of my head, feel free to add or disagree or whatever but I would like a civil conversation about my opinion/idea.
TLDR
the guns are not the problem, the in game mechanics are.
